Summary:

BayCare Kids Wellness and Safety Internship Purpose: The purpose of this internship is to take what you have learned in the classroom about Children’s Health and Safety and implement those core concepts in a community based, boots on the ground setting. Through this internship program at the BayCare Kids Wellness and Safety Center, students will have an opportunity to gain clinical experience working alongside our Mobile Medical Clinic in the community as well as provide school-based health and safety education in the field of Physical Activity and Nutrition, Highschool Healthy Heart- hands on CPR anytime education, Water Safety with door alarm and swim lesson voucher programs, as well as providing Community Event education such as bike and pedestrian safety with bike helmet distribution. Internship Criteria:

  • Interns must be able to commit to a minimum of two consecutive semesters, either Fall/Spring or Spring/Fall. Summer term is available and encouraged, in addition to the Fall/Spring requirement.

  • Students must be at least in their Junior year or higher and can continue their internship for multiple years.

  • Students must have prior experience working with children and families either in a professional or volunteer capacity, group teaching experience is preferred.

  • Students must commit to a minimum average of 15 hours per week, including 1 Saturday per month.

Opportunities Available:

  • Help students gain an understanding and appreciation for the roles, duties, and responsibilities of full-time professionals in public health and education.

  • Expose students to professional organizations and associations such as Safe Kids Greater Tampa, Healthy Start, School Health Advisory Committee, and Healthy Teen Network.

  • Provide students with leadership and professional development opportunities.

  • Give students an opportunity to participate in program planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs within various public health-related settings through the mobile medical clinic and children’s health and safety programs.

  • Help establish professional contacts and references through networking.

Requirements:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program related to the internship field (Education, Public Health, Dietetics, Health Promotion, Exercise Science, Health Science, Nursing, etc)

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Ability to travel as needed

  • Level 2 background check required
